How to properly store your THC cartridges for longevity?
Before exploring storage methods, it’s crucial to grasp the elements comprising a THC cartridge. Generally, these devices include a cartridge containing cannabis oil and a battery that heats the oil to produce vapour for inhalation. The oil is a potent mixture of the plant’s active ingredients, such as THC and terpenes.
Adequate storage is essential for maintaining the quality and potency of your THC cartridges. Exposure to elements like heat, light, and oxygen can degrade the cannabis oil, diminishing its flavour and overall experience. Inadequate storage harms the cartridge hardware, causing leaks, blockages, or operational issues.
Temperature control – Key to longevity
The key to preserving the quality of your THC cartridges lies in controlling the temperature. Cannabis oil is susceptible to heat, which causes it to degrade or evaporate when subjected to high temperatures. As a general rule, it’s best to store your cartridges in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Ideally, the storage temperature should be between 60°F and 70°F (15°C to 21°C). Avoid storing cartridges in areas with fluctuating temperatures, such as vehicles or bathrooms, as these cause the oil to expand and contract, potentially leading to leaks or damage to the cartridge.
Light and oxygen – Enemies of freshness
In addition to temperature, light and oxygen exposure can also negatively impact the quality of your THC cartridges. UV rays from sunlight degrade the cannabinoids and terpenes in the oil, altering the potency and flavour over time. Oxygen exposure causes the oil to oxidize, leading to a loss of potency and unpleasant taste. Storing your cartridges in an airtight, opaque container or bag is recommended to combat these issues. This will protect them from light and minimize exposure to oxygen, helping preserve their freshness and quality for extended periods.
Humidity – Finding the sweet spot
While temperature, light, and oxygen are the primary factors to consider, humidity also plays a role in the longevity of your THC cartridges. Too much moisture leads to mould or mildew growth, while too little causes the oil to thicken and become difficult to vaporize. The ideal humidity level for storing THC cartridges is between 59% and 63% relative humidity. You achieve this by using humidity control packs or storing cartridges in a humidor designed for cannabis products.
Proper handling and maintenance
- Avoid excessive handling – Minimize touching the cartridge with your hands, as oils and residues from your skin transfer onto the cartridge and degrade the oil over time.
- Keep cartridges upright – Store your cartridges in an upright position to prevent leaks or clogs, which lead to waste and potential damage to the hardware.
- Clean the connections – Regularly clean the cartridge’s connection points with a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol. This helps remove any buildup or residue that could interfere with proper function.
- Rotate your stock – If you have multiple cartridges, rotate your usage to ensure that no single cartridge sits unused for an extended period, which leads to degradation.
While proper storage significantly extends the shelf life of your weed carts, it’s important to remember that these products have a limited lifespan. Most manufacturers recommend consuming cartridges within 6 to 12 months of purchase for optimal quality and potency.
